Florida LB Shanon Reid signs with Tennessee

Tennessee received an official signature yesterday from 4-star outside linebacker Shanon Reid [player thread: ’17 FL OLB Shanon Reid] from Fort Myer’s Florida.

“Now the stress is finally over,” Reid told news-press.com. “Now it’s time to really put in work.”

“By the beginning of the season, I want to be starting.”

“There was just a need for linebackers,” Reid said. “There were a lot of injuries and a lot of players not playing as well as they were prior to those injuries. Going up there early can be a big thing. I can be that big piece that they’ve been missing. “

It was reported that Reid signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, but since only midyear enrollees who are junior college transfers can sign NLIs, it’s likely what Reid signed was a financial aid agreement. It means the university is committed to providing a scholarship but doesn’t technically lock the prospect into anything.

SBNation recruiting analyst Bud Elliot wrote, “I’ve seen Reid play more than a handful of times, and in a talented state, Reid was often the best player on the field.”

“He has solid size at 6’1.5, 209 pounds. Reid is an active linebacker who loves to hit and shows off great instincts to sniff out plays. When he does, he pulls the pin and gets after it. Reid has good balance and maintains tackling position so that he does not get juked. He also has good ball skills, playing tight end and, in the red zone, receiver.”

Butch Jones’ in-home visit after Reid’s trip to LSU sealed the deal, according to Elliot.

“They showed that they wanted me. They showed up,” Reid said. “They always had the same expectations for me.”

Reid, who will enroll at Tennessee on Jan. 8, will join former area stars Tyler Byrd and Carlin Fils-aime from nearby Naples High. He recorded 117 tackles during his senior season.

    • No doubt. And I like his fire – “By the beginning of the season, I want to be starting.”

With our situation at linebacker, he might be starting.
