Vols get new commit from GA DE Roman Harrison

Whether we believe it or not... this is a reach in the fashion of Butch Jones.

I was expecting a MUCH better showing recruiting wise with Pruitt.

We are running short on schollies and continue to load up on lower ranked (or unranked) players.

At 6-2, 240 pounds, Harrison ran 4.6, had a 39-inch vert and benched more than 400 pounds. Vols like him at DE.

Clear trend under Jeremy Pruitt and Tennessee's new staff: Come camp and earn a spot.

See: QB Brian Maurer, OT Chris Akporoghene, DT Elijah Simmons, DE Jalil Clemons and now DE Roman Harrison. There will be others, too.

“In terms of raw tools, there’s a lot to be excited about with Harrison,” Simmons said of Harrison, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 514 overall prospect and No. 41 weakside defensive end in the 2019 class. "He’s an explosive, powerful, country-strong dude who played out of position as a junior but still was an impact player.

"I love the idea of bringing in a hard-working kid that can lift or jump over anything you put in front of him and teaching him the technique. He’s raw but he’s exciting.”

“The fact that he plays out of position makes him that much more intriguing to me,” Simmons said. “(He is) tough and strong enough to be an inside guy, but clearly brimming with edge athleticism.”

Tennessee has a rebuilding job to do and they're not going to be filling up the recruiting class with 4-5 star players yet. It will take a while to get into the radar of the four and five star players consistantly. I think Tennessee will win 8 games this season and that will go a long way to helping that situation.

I remember what the feeling was when we picked up "low-rated" recruits when Butch was here, and I do not feel that feeling with Pruitt. I very much trust Pruitt's (and his impressive staff's) ability to see talent where some others may not.

Here's another quote by Barton Simmons:

“In terms of raw tools, there’s a lot to be excited about with Harrison,” Simmons said of Harrison. "He’s an explosive, powerful, country-strong dude who played out of position as a junior but still was an impact player. "I love the idea of bringing in a hard-working kid that can lift or jump over anything you put in front of him and teaching him the technique. He’s raw but he’s exciting.”

Harrison posted a 39-inch vertical at Tennessee’s camp last month, and he claims to have been timed at 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also has posted videos on his Twitter account that show him bench-pressing 410 pounds and power-cleaning 355 pounds.

In May, Harrison finished fourth in Georgia’s Class 5A in the discus throw. “He just strikes me as a kid that has innate, natural strength and athleticism,” Simmons said. Film from Harrison’s junior season might not show everything he’s capable of doing as an edge rusher at Tennessee since he primarily plays defensive tackle. But he still recorded 50 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries last year.

He admitted defensive tackle isn't his best position, and it’s likely not where he will play in college. But it’s simply where his team needs him to play. “The fact that he plays out of position makes him that much more intriguing to me,” Simmons said. “(He is) tough and strong enough to be an inside guy, but clearly brimming with edge athleticism.”

Coach Pruitt seems like one of those coaches who is good at finding diamonds in the rough players:cool2:

This is awfully familiar to the Butch Jones staff. I guess we'll have to wait and see if some big offers come in for this guy

People need to learn their lessons about falling on the extreme ends of the spectrum.

Butch couldn't coach up 3, 4, or 5 stars. We don't know yet if Pruitt and company can. People should relax a little bit and let them evaluate talent for a year or two. No one should expect us to be landing ten 5-stars in this class. But no one should expect Pruitt and Butch are equals when it comes to coaching up a 3-star, either.

The kid is 6'2", between 230 and 250, 39" vertical, supposedly ran a 4.6, and benches 400 pounds. He plays out of position in HS due to his team needs, so his stats aren't great. He camped in person with the staff and they offered him. He passed every measurement and checked every box this staff feels a player needs to fit their system.

This staff is methodical in their evaluations and what they look for before they offer. They just don't hand out offers because a player showed up.

I think we will see a big difference in the quality of 3 star that Pruitt offers and gets versus what we saw under CBJ. I don't recall ever hearing about Butch taking measurements on kids. I think Butch was a star chaser, pure and simple.

I think this is a good pick up.

Edit.. and this kid has a motor. He doesn't let up.
